Teaching Materials
Teachers will make use of excellent study books, especially written for the higher educated participant learning Swedish. Also, we will make use of audio/visual equipment. Most of the study books come with a web based CD, so it is handy if the students bring their own laptops.
Methodology
The UISS teaches Swedish according to the direct method. This means that we aim at speaking Swedish even in the beginning classes. Where needed teachers will offer a short explanation in English, but we prefer speaking Swedish as much as possible.
Social and Cultural Activities
Our regular excursions and activities allow our students to visit sites around Sweden and to experience Swedish culture, history, and society first hand. Every Friday there are day-long field trips to interesting places. Weoffer also three longer weekend trips, to Helsinki, Lapland and Värmland at an extra cost. Additionally, evening activities include sports, films, entertainment, lectures and intercultural gatherings.
Accommodation
In Uppsala, almost all single rooms and apartments will be in the dormitories at Studentvägen or Sturegatan. Apartments may also be elsewhere. Please indicate the lodging of your choice on your application form.
Excursions and Visits
When learning a language it is equally important to learn about the culture, the history and the society in which the language is embedded. In the UISS program we offer a lot of extra-curricular activities during the week in order to acquaint our students with Swedish customs and traditions, the Swedish culture and society. Also excursions to various parts of the country on Fridays are an integral part of the course and allow students to experience the diversity of cultures, traditions and landscapes within Sweden.
