Methodology
We strive to give our students a true understanding and feeling for the Spanish Language. We believe in the communicative approach, and that total immersion is the best manner to learn. Class sizes are kept small, with a maximum of 6 students per class, in order to maximize student talk time and one-on-one attention from the teacher.
The Communicative Approach to language teaching actively engages the learner in the classroom. This system of teaching puts the focus of learning on the learner, meaning that he or she is an engaged and active participant in the language acquisition process. Students learn to speak in meaningful, real-life situations that teach them to communicate appropriately in a social and linguistic context. Our syllabus and the framework for class sessions are tailored to the needs of students in an immersion program, and are designed to integrate the many cultural offerings available into the learning process.
Social and Cultural Activities
Latin dance & music classes, Costa Rican cooking classes and arts and crafts, yoga, zumba, surfing, conversational classes, film nights, intercambios, eco-hiking/biking and volunteer opportunities.
Accommodation
Families provide an ideal way to really get to know Costa Rica, and to receive a wonderful introduction to Costa Rican culture. The families are extraordinarily friendly, and willingly invite you to share their vibrant, happy lifestyle as a member of the family. Most importantly, you get to practice your language skills in the best possible classroom, that of daily interactions, with people who are patient and enjoy helping you learn. You will have your own room, and receive breakfast, dinner and laundry service at your homestay. Our families all live within walking distance of the school.
At our Samara Campus we offer several hotel options for those interested. Hotels include different amenities, based on rates and availability. Most have AC and/or swimming pool. Prices are based on double occupancy; singles will have a surcharge applied. Hotel rooms all have private bathrooms with hot water.
Excursions and Visits
On weekends we host excursions to many different parts of the country. Possibilities range from relaxing on a white sand beach, to studying the complex ecosystems of the Monteverde Cloud Forest, to watching the eruptions of a live volcano! During the week we take students to soccer games, hidden beaches and local hikes.
